O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move in Los Angeles in 1986. Career O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring role in the ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Additionally, she appeared in several shows. Her roles included the independent and TV-produced films. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde secretary of the squad was played from 1993-96. Each of the seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by a Drama Series.
