O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She experienced significant defeats in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and bottom two and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performances were consistent that he did not fall into the bottom 3. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
